The state cabinet granted Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel the authority to form a committee for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat. The names of the committee members will be announced by the Chief Minister later.

The committee will most likely be chaired by a retired High Court judge.

"An important decision was taken today in the state cabinet meeting to form a high level committee was set up comprising a retired Supreme Court/High Court judge to examine the need for a Uniform Civil Code in the state and prepare a draft for this code," CM Bhupendra Patel tweeted.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Bhupendra Patel took a historic decision in the cabinet meeting today - of forming a committee for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state," Gujarat home minister Harsh Sanghavi was quoted as saying by ANI. Gujarat will hold elections in December, with the dates yet to be announced.

The governments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have already expressed a desire to enact the Uniform Civil Code.
