Congress President Polls: Mallikarjun Kharge resigns as Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP)
After submitting his nomination for the office of Congress president on Friday, seasoned Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge sent his resignation as the party's leader in the Rajya Sabha.
Following the Udaipur Resolution of One Leader One Post, Kharge reportedly sent Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, a letter resigning from the position.
In a letter to Sonia Gandhi, the acting president of the Congress, Kharge stated, "I thus tender my resignation from the post of Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, subsequent upon my submitting of nomination for the post of President, All India Congress Committee."
According to reports, senior politicians Digvijaya Singh and P Chidambaram are the front-runners to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
If chosen, he will succeed Jagjivan Ram as the second Dalit leader and AICC president from Karnataka after S. Nijalingappa.
Friday after submitting his nomination, the Karnataka MP urged all delegates to support him.
Kharge told reporters at the AICC office, "I thank senior leaders from across all states for backing me in the Congress presidential election.
