TMC raises questions over Sourav Ganguly not getting second term as BCCI President

The Trinamool Congress questioned on Tuesday whether Sourav Ganguly was being refused a second term as BCCI President because the BJP refused to accept him into the party. The allegation was made after BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that Roger Binny would succeed Sourav Ganguly as BCCI President.

"Another case of political vengeance. Amit Shah's son may be retained as BCCI secretary. But Sourav Ganguly isn't one of them. Is it because he is from Mamata Banerjee's state or because he did not join the BJP?" TMC Rajya Sabha MP Dr Santanu Sen tweeted.

Earlier, Rajeev Shukla stated that Roger Binny had filed a nomination for BCCI President, Jay Shah for secretary, and Ashish Shelar for treasurer.

According to PTI, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh alleged the BJP of attempting to humiliate the former Indian captain.

"The BJP tried to convey the message among people ahead of last year's Assembly elections that Ganguly, who is enormously popular in the state, would join the party," Ghosh told PTI.

"We are not making any direct comments on this matter. However, given that the BJP disseminated such propaganda during and after the elections, it will undoubtedly be the BJP's responsibility to react to such speculations (that politics is behind Ganguly not getting a second term as BCCI President). The BJP appears to be attempting to humiliate Sourav," he went on to say.

According to a BCCI source, Ganguly wanted to continue as BCCI President, but he was told that there is no precedent for giving the Board president a second term, PTI reported.

Ganguly was offered the IPL chairmanship, but he declined, stating that he cannot accept becoming the head of a BCCI sub-committee after leading the same organisation.
