Saffron, also known as the "King of Condiments" is reputed to be the most expensive spice on earth. Majorly produced in Kashmir and Srinagar, saffron this year has surpassed the decade - old records in producing the spice ranging from 1.5 lakhs to 2.5 lakhs per kilogram.

Kashmir, the Paradise on Earth is one of the largest producers of Saffron across the globe. Saffron, also known as the King Of Condiments have an average costing of 1.5 - 2.5 lakhs per kilogram. During 1990s,the production od saffreon at Kashmir was at peak fetching around 15.5 tonnes on an average. It has declined since then, the main reasons being either too much or too little rainfall in that area.

According to the sources, Kashmir has the potential of producing 6 to 7 kilograms of saffrn per hectare. The increase in the production has been credited to the National Mission on saffron launched in 2010, under which sprinkler irrigation and root rejuvination of crop was introduced.

A Saffron cultivator at thosearea has stated that from now on, an increase in production is expected in the areas, due to the adequate amount of facilities available.
