Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers protested Rahul Gandhi's disparaging statements a day after he said Vinayak Damodar Savarkar assisted the British and received payment for it.
On Sunday morning in Mumbai, BJP leader Ram Kadam organised a "Joota Maaro Andolan" demonstration with members of his party to condemn Rahul Gandhi's disrespect of the freedom warrior.
"The disparaging remarks made by Rahul Gandhi are terrible and appalling," Ram Kadam stated. He needs to apologise. He has repeatedly made comments like these that are completely unacceptable.
Kadam questioned Uddhav Thackeray's position on the matter by asking, "What is Uddhav Thackeray's position on this issue? Why doesn't he speak up or criticise Rahul Gandhi? He ditched the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray and Hindutva.”
Rahul Gandhi had stated during a news conference in Karnataka on Saturday, "As far as I can remember, it was Congress party leaders who opposed the British and were sentenced to years in prison. Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi all lost their lives defending India from the British."
"According to my historical research, the RSS supported the British. According to the Congress leader, Savarkar used to receive a stipend from the British, and these are historical truths that even the BJP cannot deny "Added he.
Rahul Gandhi needs to apologise, said posters and banners held by BJP supporters. The BJP workers also displayed posters of Uddhav Thackeray with the slogan "Speak up, why are you silent now" in the protest.
