Exactly 10 years ago, on 18th January 2011, Son scored his first international goal which came against the Blue Tigers of India. The match was a group game in the AFC Asian Cup in Doha where India lost 4-1 to South Korea.

The outing although not a pleasant one, was a memorable one as it marked the end of one of the Indian football greats, Baichung Bhutia. For South Korea, Ji Dong-won scored a brace and Koo Ja-Cheol and Son scored one each while the only consolation goal for the Indians came from a penalty from Sunil Chhetri.

Playing for Tottenham Hotspurs, he is the first Asian to score 50 goals in the English Premier League and has been ranked most times in Ballon d’Or amongst Asians. Seen as an icon in his country, Son has 89 international caps scoring 26 goals in total. They also achieved success in the 2018 World Cup where he played a crucial role in the campaign where they won against Germany 2-0 although they were evicted from the group stages itself.

He made a debut in 2010 for the national team against Syria in a friendly and his second appearance on the international stage against India marked his presence. The journey has come a long way and everyone still praises Son for his performances.
